Understanding Process Safety and Process Hazards
Based on BoK Chapter 13: Process Safety, this online program will cover the fundamentals of process safety, including an understanding of what process safety is, how it is similar and how it differs from OHS and how it can be effectively managed.
It also covers some underpinning science to understand the different hazards and how they become consequences as well as the practical application of controls from an engineering perspective.
Why This Course Is Different
Unlike traditional training, this is an adaptive learning course. That means:
- The learning path automatically adjusts to your existing level of knowledge, so you skip what you already know and focus on what you need
- You progress faster—cutting the time to competency significantly—while ensuring you master all key concepts and skills
- Real-world examples and scenarios are safety specific, making learning immediately relevant
Learning Outcomes
At the end of the course, you will be able to:
- Explain the similarities and differences between OHS and process safety
- Identify the basic principles of process safety risk assessment, including how to reference engineering drawings
- Identify the importance of Management of Change from a process safety perspective and apply it
- Identify common process hazards, including the underpinning science, hazardous substances (from a PS perspective) and ignition sources that exist in their workplace
- Identify process safety consequences that could occur in their workplace and explain how they are evaluated and displayed, including fires, explosions and toxic effects
Who's it For
This program is designed for safety practitioners who work in major hazard facilities and anyone interested in understanding process safety.
It will not make you a process safety expert but will provide a baseline understanding so you can identify process safety hazards and engage in risk management with process safety professionals.
