What is the difference between the ERO and ERL certification?
The Emergency Response Officer (ERO) certification is for individuals in frontline response roles, while the Emergency Response Leader (ERL) certification is for those who supervise or lead emergency response teams. ERL candidates must meet all ERO requirements plus demonstrate leadership experience and hold additional qualifications.
Do I need to be a member of AIHS to apply?
No. You do not need to be an AIHS member to apply for Emergency Response Certification. However, having a member profile will allow you to access and manage your application through the Emergency Response Dashboard. Creating a profile is free and can be done as part of the application process.

The ESSA is the Emergency Services Skills Assessment.
What is the Grandfathering Pathway?

You’ll still need to provide logbook evidence, hold current CPR and MHFA certifications, and show progress toward formal training over your 3-year certification cycle.
How do I track my application progress?
Your Emergency Response Dashboard shows each section of your application and its status. You can upload documents, view which steps are complete, and monitor your progress through the certification process. Also, as you progress through the stages of your application. You’ll receive email notifications as your application progresses.
What happens after I submit my application?
Your application will be reviewed in stages. Once Stage 1 is complete (documents, eligibility, referees), you'll move to Stage 2, where the Certification Team will review and ensure all elements of your application have been provided. When this is approved you'll be moved to Stage 3, which includes interviews and assessment review. You’ll receive email notifications as your application progresses.
How do I log my hours for the capability logbook?
You’ll need to record hours spent performing emergency response activities aligned to the 7 capabilities. A downloadable logbook template is available in the dashboard. Logbooks must show:
