Understanding Workplace Chemicals
Chemical hazards are a major ongoing concern in workplaces.
In Australia, workers in some industries and specific workplaces have a higher risk of exposure, however, all workplaces have some exposures to chemicals.
As safety practitioners, it is important to understand the basics of safe chemical management, and to know when you don't know enough to confidently reduce risks of chemical exposures.
This course is based on BoK Chapter 17.1: Managing Chemical Hazards
Why This Course Is Different
Unlike traditional training, this is an adaptive learning course. That means:
- The learning path automatically adjusts to your existing level of knowledge, so you skip what you already know and focus on what you need
- You progress faster—cutting the time to competency significantly—while ensuring you master all key concepts and skills
- Real-world examples and scenarios are safety specific, making learning immediately relevant
Learning Outcomes
At the end of the course, you will be able to:
- Provide an overview of hazardous chemicals and explain the significance of managing these in the workplace
- Identify the methods and tools used to identify chemical hazards for management and risk mitigation
- Understand risk assessment to ensure effective management of chemical hazards
- Identify potential chemical hazards and implement appropriate control measures
- Applying knowledge of chemical hazard management in practical scenarios
Who's it For
This course is designed for safety practitioners who are involved in managing or working with chemicals in the workplace, particularly those who may be new to the field or seeking foundational knowledge.
This training course is very introductory. There are many different bits of legislation, the hazards of the chemicals can be difficult to understand, and chemicals can interact with the environment in inconsistent ways.
If you find yourself dealing with many chemicals in unusual or variable ways, you may need to consult with an expert, such as an occupational hygienist, a chemist or a toxicologist.
