HATCH & AIHS: Reflective Leadership - Engaging for greater participation

Networking Event

Event Overview:

The Australian Institute of Health & Safety and the QLD Branch invite you to join us on Wednesday 22 July, 2026

Reflective leadership is not about stepping back. It is about stepping in with curiosity, humility, and intent so people feel safe to speak up, contribute ideas, and shape how work is done.

At this HATCH & AIHS Forum, keynote speaker Dr Tim Allred, a safety leader with Downer’s Energy and Utilities division, will share practical insights from his doctoral research and ongoing work on reflective practice. Tim will unpack what reflective practice looks like in real leadership moments, including how simple, structured reflection can strengthen decision making, learning, and professional judgement, especially in complex safety environments.

Ed Banks and the HATCH team will then bring it to life through a case study on how reflective leadership is used within project teams to build engagement and drive greater participation. Expect practical examples of the routines, questions, and micro behaviours that shift participation from “being consulted” to genuine contribution and shared ownership.

You will leave with a clearer understanding of reflective leadership, a practical set of techniques you can apply immediately, and renewed confidence to create the conditions where people choose to participate.

Key Learning Outcomes

  • Understand what reflective leadership is and how reflective practice can improve decision making, learning, and professional judgement in complex safety environments.
  • Apply practical reflective techniques, including questions, routines, and micro behaviours that help leaders create the conditions for people to speak up and contribute.
  • Translate the HATCH case study into actionable steps for your own project teams, strengthening participation, shared ownership, and follow-through on improvements.
